Mantel clocks are small in size and designed specifically to sit on a fireplace mantel, a table or a shelf.

The French developed Mantel Clocks in the mid-1700s. A Mantel clock–or “mantle” as they are sometimes spelled–is a mechanical clock that uses a pendulum to regulate the time.

A spring supplies power to a system of internal gears. Mantel clock repairs usually consist of making adjustments to the pendulum.

When measuring the front to back alignment of the mantel clock as it sits on its resting place, one needs to use a bubble level.

This alignment is essential in keeping the pendulum from resting on the clock’s bell or its back wall. Finally, one should shim any unevenness as before.

You may adjust the left-to-right level of the clock by gently bending its “crutch,” also known as a “verge ” in the direction that is low. The crutch is a loop of wire which attaches to the pendulum.

By adjusting the crutch one will fix the swing of the wall clock pendulum, and this affects the mantel clock movement or ‘escapement’ which makes the tick-tock sound.

If the mantel clock sits on an uneven surface one may slide a small shim such as a washer, a quarter or a matchbook cover under the lowest section of the clock, and this will raise the clock to a level position.

Remeasure the clock using a bubble level to be sure the placement of the shim corrected the unevenness of the clock.

The ability of a mantel clock to keep accurate time depends on the evenness of the surface on which the clock sits.

A clock placed on an uneven or rough surface will have an off-sounding beat.   The “tick” will not sound quite as long or as loud as the “tock”.

Once one levels the surface, the beat will self correct, as will the time keeping ability of the clock.

One may use a bubble level to determine if a mantel clock’s resting position is on an even surface. If the location of the clock is not level, then one should determine if an uneven surface can be corrected. Alternatively, the clock may be moved to a level location.

The new site should be vibration free from slamming doors and heavy foot traffic that can bring the clock out of alignment. Before relocating the clock, carefully remove the pendulum from inside the clock to prevent internal damage.

The ability of a mantel clock to keep accurate time depends how level the clock sits. A clock, which sits at an uneven angle, will have a beat which sounds “off”.

The “tick” will not sound as loud, or last as long as the “tock.” When one levels the uneven clock, the process will fix the clock’s off-sounding beat and accordingly adjust its time keeping ability.
